Manuel Neuer put an end to his career with the Germany national team. The 40-year-old goalkeeper confirmed to ARD radio, shortly after the elimination against Paraguay in the 2026 World Cup, that the match was his last for the Germans. When asked if this had been his last international appearance, the answer was short and unequivocal: "Yes".
"It's extremely bitter that it ends like this", lamented Neuer, hours after Germany were eliminated in the Round of 32, on penalties. The veteran even saved one of the penalties, but the effort proved insufficient to avoid elimination.
This is Neuer's second goodbye to the national team. The goalkeeper had already ended his international chapter after Euro 2024, but was convinced by coach Julian Nagelsmann to return for the 2026 World Cup, with the aim of bringing experience and stability to the goal.
With 128 caps and world champion in 2014, Neuer says goodbye to the Mannschaft, leaving behind a huge national team career. At club level, the goalkeeper has a contract with Bayern München until mid-2027.
