According to Championat.
Context
Xavi, a former Barcelona player and influential figure in football, brings with him a rich Dutch football heritage. His connection with the La Masia academy and the influence of coaches such as Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard shaped his approach, which he now intends to apply to the Netherlands national team.
Why this matters
The appointment of Xavi Hernández as coach of the Netherlands marks a new era for the team, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching. His playing philosophy, inspired by legends such as Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, promises to revitalize the identity of Dutch football, which has always been known for its offensive and possession style.
Main conclusions

Xavi Hernández publicly expressed his satisfaction after being announced as the new coach of the Netherlands. In statements published on the website of the Dutch federation (KNVB), the Spanish coach classified the opportunity as "a huge honor" and highlighted his historical connection to the country's football, shaped by the ideas of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels since their training days at the Barcelona academy.
«As someone educated in La Masia, very influenced by Cruyff and Michels, I feel a special connection with Dutch football. You could say that I am, to a certain extent, a 'son' of that football", said Xavi, also remembering the impact that other coaches had on his career. The new coach highlighted, in particular, Louis van Gaal — under whom he made his debut in the Barcelona first team — and Frank Rijkaard, references that helped consolidate his vision of the game as a player and, later, as a coach.
Regarding the model he intends to see in ‘Oranje’, Xavi was clear: attacking football, supported by possession of the ball, creativity, passion and conviction. «The main objective is to win, but I want to do it in such a way that these characteristics are always present and that people can enjoy», he added, ensuring that he sees in the Dutch team the potential and basis necessary to implement that competitive and aesthetic identity.
The KNVB announced the change in technical command following the departure of Ronald Koeman, who had led the team since 2023. At the 2026 World Cup, the Netherlands fell in the 1/16 finals against Morocco, after a 1-1 draw and a 2-3 defeat in the penalty shoot-out. The early elimination paved the way for a new cycle and the federation is now betting on Xavi to revitalize the team and reinforce a game matrix that has always characterized Dutch football.
The historical framework favors the choice. The legacy of Michels and Cruyff, pillars of the so-called 'total football', has always sought to reconcile results and spectacle, principles that Xavi embraces as his own. The reference to Van Gaal and Rijkaard reinforces this philosophical continuity: organization, ball as a starting point and ambition to control games. In practical terms, the Spaniard's mission will involve consolidating a clear and sustainable idea, capable of leveraging the available talent and returning the 'Oranje' to the competitive levels that fans demand.
«I'm looking forward to starting this challenge with the players, the technical team and all the people at the association», concluded Xavi, in a message that combines respect for Dutch tradition and the desire to stamp his own mark. From now on, the focus turns to relaunching the national team and the ability to transform principles into victories, without giving up the identity that makes the Netherlands a global reference.
What happens next
With Ronald Koeman's departure confirmed, Xavi now faces the challenge of preparing the team for the 2026 World Cup. He must implement his game vision and build a competitive team that not only aspires to win, but also delights fans with attractive and creative football.
