Christian Vieri, former striker for the Italian national team, was convinced that the future of the Italian attack is guaranteed with young Francesco Pio Esposito. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Vieri praised the emerging talent of Italian football and did not hesitate to make a bold prediction: "In seven or eight years, he will beat Gigi Riva's record."
This statement underlines the confidence that Vieri has in Esposito's ability to become one of the best strikers in the country. However, the former player warned that to reach that level, the youngster still needs to improve his movements in the box, a crucial aspect to become a striker who can score 20 goals per season, both at club and national team level.
Vieri made an interesting comparison between Esposito and Luca Toni, stating that the young striker's characteristics are more similar to the iconic Italian goalscorer. "Pio is more like Toni, in my opinion," said Vieri, reinforcing the idea that Esposito has the necessary tools to shine in football.
The former player also praised the work of current coach Roberto Mancini, highlighting his courage in betting on young talents: "He changes teams and gives space to the boys. It's something that few do, but his example is important."
Furthermore, Vieri expressed optimism regarding the performance of Gianluca Scamacca, who recently scored a goal against Turkey. For the former striker, scoring for the national team is vital from a psychological point of view, providing a dose of confidence to the player.
Vieri also defended Scamacca's choice not to celebrate the goal, explaining that playing for the national team is an even more demanding task. "Don't worry, it's a complicated situation," he said.
Finally, Vieri left some advice for Daniel Maldini, who moved to Cagliari in search of more playing minutes: "He needs to play regularly. It's better to be in a smaller team, where he can play thirty games, than in clubs where he doesn't play often." For Vieri, only through consistent playing time can Maldini's talent truly flourish and be recognized.
What happens next
With Vieri's confidence, Esposito is expected to receive more opportunities in the Italian national team, especially under the leadership of Roberto Mancini, who has been praised for promoting emerging talent. Gianluca Scamacca's performance will also be monitored, as a strong attack is vital to the Nazionale's success in future competitions. Daniel Maldini's evolution at Cagliari will also be observed, as he seeks consistency to assert himself in professional football.
