- A talented young man, Matias Siltanen: the midfielder who leaves Finland U21.
Finland U21 is experiencing a moment of affirmation and, at the center of this growth, is Matias Siltanen. Born on March 29, 2007 in Kuopio, the 19-year-old midfielder quickly became one of the references of the team that recently beat Spain, a result that consolidated international attention on the new wave of Finnish talent. Siltanen is now seen as one of the drivers of the Nordics' game, due to the way he dictates rhythms, balances the team and accelerates the exit from behind.
The evolution at the club accompanied the rise in the youth team. In 2025, Siltanen signed a three-year contract with Djurgårdens IF, a historic Swedish club, and quickly gained space in the starting line-up. The many appearances and the volume of minutes underline the confidence gained, based on solid performances. In a demanding competitive context, the Finn has shown maturity to take on the first phase of construction, connect sectors and protect the defensive line.
His natural habitat is the '6' position, as a deeper midfielder. He stands out for his reading of the game, quality of his passing – short and long –, ability to intercept and competence in the progression of the ball. He is not just destructive: he actively participates in the offensive organization, offering lines, turning the flank with discretion and accelerating when he finds the right window. It's a modern profile, adapted to current football, where the holding midfielder is also the initiator of attacks.
His impact on the national teams earned him his first call-up to Finland's main team in May 2025, for qualifying games towards the 2026 World Cup. Even though he continues to be a pillar of the U21, this call-up confirms the projection of the young man from Kuopio and the confidence that the technical structure places in his growth. For Finland, who aspire to be present on the biggest stage, players with this tactical density and personality can make a difference in the qualifiers.
External recognition came early. In 2024, Siltanen was included in The Guardian's “Next Generation” list, which highlights young people with the potential to become references in world football. The recurring comparison to Croatian Luka Modric does not imply career parity, but helps to describe traits: positional intelligence, serenity on the ball and the ability to control the game in both directions.

What happens next
With his recent call-up to the Finland A team, Siltanen may have the opportunity to demonstrate his talent in international competitions, such as the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. His continuation at Djurgårdens IF will be crucial for his growth, where he is expected to maintain his position as a starter and continue to evolve as one of the main midfielders in Allsvenskan.
