With Roberto De Zerbi at the helm, Tottenham are accelerating their reconstruction and securing a strong reinforcement for the midfield. According to The Athletic, Spurs have reached an agreement with West Ham United to sign Mateus Fernandes, overcoming competition from other teams, including Manchester United.

The operation was sealed for 85 million pounds, around 98 million euros, a value that meets West Ham's demands. Manchester United will have considered the bar above the spending parameters defined for the player.

Mateus Fernandes, 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, arrives in North London after a last season with 36 games, 3 goals and 4 assists. The player had been signed by the Hammers from Southampton in August 2025 for £38 million.

This is the fourth reinforcement of the summer for Tottenham, after the free arrivals of Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi, and the acquisition of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for 52 million pounds.

International A for Portugal since April 2026, Mateus Fernandes ended up not being part of Roberto Martínez's final list for the World Cup.
