- That phone call from Comolli to Gasperini: I spoke to him... to Moggi.
An alleged phone call from Damien Comolli to Gian Piero Gasperini, then coach of Atalanta, is causing people to talk in Italy. According to information provided by the Italian press, in the summer of 2025, when Juventus was going through a sensitive dossier when choosing its next coach, Comolli made an exploratory contact with Gasperini. The additional curiosity of the case is the fact that the coach himself, according to the same versions, confirmed the episode to Luciano Moggi, former Juventus director.
The information is part of the coaches carousel that marked that closed season in Italy. According to reports, responsibility for conducting the selection process at Juventus would fall under the responsibility of Damien Comolli, a professional with a long track record in management roles in European football. At the time, Gian Piero Gasperini was approaching the end of a very long cycle in Bergamo, after practically a decade leading Atalanta and having consistently promoted them to European competitions.
Gasperini, remember, transformed Atalanta into a team recognized for its offensive football, judicious use of the 3-4-3 and ability to promote talent. Under his command, the Bergamo team collected appearances in the Champions League, signed notable European campaigns and won recent titles, making the coach one of the most coveted names among the great Italian teams.
For his part, Damien Comolli is a well-known manager on the international scene, with spells at clubs such as Tottenham and Liverpool, and more recently linked to French football. His possible intervention in an internal process at Juventus, as described by Italian media, illustrates the scale and delicacy of the decision that the Turin club was facing during that period.
The reference to Luciano Moggi adds an element of notoriety to the theme. The former general director of Juventus, a central figure in Italian football at the turn of the century, appears as the recipient of Gasperini's confirmation of the phone call in question, according to the same sources. Without official communications from those involved, the episode remains in the realm of reports, even though it helps to explain the intensity of the rumors that surrounded the succession on the Vecchia Signora's bench in 2025.
It is important to highlight that informal contacts and surveys are common at this stage of the market, especially when coaches with Gasperini's profile and achievements enter the radar of clubs the size of Juventus. Even with no outcome known from this information, Comolli's alleged phone call illustrates the degree of diligence and range of scenarios that Juventus will have considered before finalizing its choice for technical command.
In short, what is being discussed in Italy today is an episode that, being presented behind the scenes, helps to illuminate the silent dispute for top coaches: Gasperini, at the height of the reputation built at Atalanta, and Juventus, in search of a leader capable of returning stability and competitive ambition. Apparently, there was at least a preliminary conversation — and the person who validated it was the coach himself, in confidence to Moggi, according to published reports.
What happens next
With Juventus exploring coaching options, attention now falls on how Comolli's choice could impact the team next season. Gasperini's departure from Atalanta could open up new opportunities for the Bergamo club, while Juventus are looking for a leader who can bring immediate success. The continuity of the coaching carousel in Serie A could also influence the dynamics between rival clubs.
