Real Madrid travels to Manchester City (9pm/Disney +) for the match corresponding to the second round of the group stage of the Women's Champions League, where they are looking for their first victory in the competition. The players coached by Pau Quesada made their debut in the competition last week, having drawn 1-1 against Paris Saint-Germain at the Alfredo di Stéfano Stadium. Young Swedish striker Felicia Schröder put the Whites ahead in the second minute of the game, but PSG defender Karchaoui converted a penalty at the end of the match, securing a draw. Currently, Real Madrid occupies tenth place in this stage of the Champions League, with just five rounds to go, with the first four teams guaranteeing a place in the quarter-finals, while those that finish between fifth and twelfth place will have to compete in a playoff to continue in the competition. The team's objective is to reach the quarter-finals, which was their limit on three previous occasions in the Champions League. In League F, Real Madrid remains undefeated, with four wins and one draw, the latter against Eibar at home, recording a total of 13 goals scored and 6 conceded, totaling 13 points, just two behind the leader, Barcelona, who they will meet on October 4th.
Coach Pau Quesada managed to rest some players in the last national league game before the match against PSG, but he won't have the same luck in this Thursday's duel. Last Saturday, Madrid faced Real Sociedad in a complicated game that ended in a 5-3 victory, where Schröder scored two goals in the final minutes. Athenea del Castillo returned to the starting lineup, having now completely recovered from the collarbone injury that kept her out of some games. However, Frenchwoman Sandie Toletti is still unavailable due to a biceps femoris tendon injury, as are Sara Holmgaard and Filippa Angeldahl. The under-20 world champions with the Spanish team, who won the title last Sunday, may be available again.
On the Manchester City side, which is returning to the competition after its absence in the 2025-2026 season, it also drew in the first round of the group stage, against Bayern Munich, in which the game ended in a 2-2 draw, with a goal from Carlotta Wamser in the 86th minute. In the English Super League, the "sky blue" started the season with four wins in four games, thus leading the league table. The team coached by Swede Andrée Jeglertz has conceded just four goals so far, two of which came in the 4-2 victory against Liverpool. City's biggest threats will be forwards Beth Mead, European champion with the English team in 2022 and 2025, and Kadija Shaw, the best scorer in the history of the English club. Dutch Vivianne Miedema, who scored 14 goals last season, has yet to make her debut this season due to a knee injury she suffered at the beginning of September.
The two clubs have already met on three occasions in the Women's Champions League, with a balance of two wins for Real Madrid and one match ending in a draw. The last clash took place at the Alfredo di Stéfano Stadium, in August 2022, where Real Madrid won 1-0, with a goal from Caroline Weir.
What happens next
Real Madrid faces a significant challenge when facing Manchester City, one of the most competitive clubs in the Champions League. The result of this game could have a decisive impact on their season, especially with an important clash against Barcelona in the F League approaching, where the team is looking to stay in the fight for the title.
