In the lead-up to the highly anticipated Champions League duel between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, OneFootball launched a challenge to its 10 million followers on Instagram: choose a combined eleven from the two squads. The exercise, common in major European games, generated thousands of votes and a final line-up featuring some obvious choices — such as Erling Haaland — and others that were quite surprising.
According to the platform, among the most voted names are prominent figures in European football. The list released by OneFootball mentions, for example, Haaland and Kvaratskhelia, as well as young Doué and Cherki, a sign of fans' enthusiasm for emerging talents. On the other hand, there were significant absences mentioned by the community itself: Ferran Torres, Ousmane Dembélé, Jérémy Doku and Enzo Fernández did not make the final preferences of this eleven idealized by the fans.
On the eve of a PSG-Man City always full of expectations in the Champions League, the vote serves as a thermometer for popular sentiment around the two teams and the most prominent stars on the European scene. Manchester City, European champions in 2023 and a regular presence in the last stages of the competition, arrive at these games with the aura of those who have dominated the competition in recent years. On the other hand, Paris Saint-Germain seeks, season after season, to take the decisive step towards the title that eludes them, maintaining a competitive base that places them, invariably, among the candidates.
The OneFootball community's choices also reflect a recurring phenomenon in these social media dynamics: the mix between recent form, status and individual preference. It is natural that high-scoring forwards, creative midfielders or disruptive wingers receive a large share of the votes, while some established names fall behind when competition is fierce in key positions. The case of Dembélé (PSG) and Doku (Man City), identified as notable omissions, illustrates how fans' perception can swing between immediate impact and consistency.
This type of combined eleven is not intended to replace the technical analysis of coaches nor does it project real elevens; It is, above all, an entertaining portrait of what fans value before a big European game. With so much quality from both sides, the debate is underway and curiosity increases to see who, on the field, will confirm popular favoritism or, on the contrary, will take the opportunity to counter the vote and claim a prominent place when the ball starts rolling.
What happens next
With the game approaching, expectations are high to see how the fans' choices will translate onto the field. Manchester City, current European champions, are looking to reaffirm their strong position in the Champions League, while PSG are looking for a victory that solidifies their ambition in the competition. The performance of stars like Haaland could be decisive in the outcome of this exciting clash.
