Florian Wirtz, since joining Liverpool for £116m from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025, has been a standout player, racking up 7 goals and 11 assists in 55 games for the Reds. However, the young midfielder has faced criticism from analysts and fans due to inconsistent form and an apparent lack of physical strength in the demanding Premier League.
Jürgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, recently praised Wirtz, highlighting his ability and adaptability to the team's style of play. "Our style is ideal for Wirtz. I don't know what else he has to do to satisfy everyone. Everyone at Liverpool should be happy with what he offers," said Klopp, highlighting the player's importance in the team's tactical scheme.
Despite the praise, the pressure on Wirtz continues to increase, with many questioning whether he is capable of maintaining a level of performance that justifies the high investment. Amid this scenario, Oliver Bierhoff, one of the most respected figures in German football, publicly defended the player's decision to consider a move to Barcelona.
Bierhoff said Wirtz could thrive under Hansi Flick's guidance at Barcelona, where he would have the right environment to shine. "Wirtz would fit perfectly into Hansi Flick's Barcelona, where he would have space and great teammates. He is a world-class player who now needs to show his quality with consistency and impact," said Bierhoff.
Furthermore, Luis de la Fuente, Spain's coach, also praised Wirtz, considering him an extraordinary player and regretting that he does not have a Spanish passport. De la Fuente, who has players such as Pau Torres, Eric García, Ferran Torres, Pedri and Ansu Fati in his squad, considered whether Wirtz could have a place in his team if he had Spanish nationality.
Wirtz's transfer to Barcelona could be a solution not only for the player, but also for the Catalan club, which is looking to reinforce its midline with young and promising talents. With pressure and expectations mounting, it will be crucial for Wirtz to find an environment where he can shine again.
What happens next
With the summer approaching, the transfer window promises to be busy, especially for players like Wirtz who are struggling for consistency. Liverpool could consider offers, while Barcelona appear to be preparing to strengthen their midfield. Wirtz's decision could influence not only his career, but also the dynamics of the transfer market, especially if other clubs join the race for the young talent.
