Cardiff City manager Brian Barry-Murphy has praised Jack Moylan, saying the player still has much more to offer, after the midfielder underlined his position as one of the Championship's rising stars. Moylan, who competed against the Bluebirds in last season's promotion race with Lincoln City, has become a priority target for Cardiff ahead of their return to the Championship. Since his move to south Wales in the summer, the former League of Ireland player has performed remarkably well, having already reached the milestone of five league goals, including a hat-trick in the 5-1 victory over Watford.
In the last match, Moylan was used as a makeshift striker, a decision that only reinforced his attacking prowess, as he has also scored four goals in six appearances for the Republic of Ireland since making his debut in May. The player has proven to be a constant concern for Championship defences, ranking only behind Middlesbrough's Will Lankshear, Southampton's Cyle Larin and West Ham's Jarrod Bowen in the league's top scorers list so far this season. With two assists, only Bowen, Lankshear and Southampton's Finn Azaz have more goal contributions than Moylan's seven.
Barry-Murphy explained that one of the main reasons for signing Moylan was his adaptability to different situations on the pitch. "I saw him play as a striker for Ireland on some important occasions. He has certain qualities that could be very useful for us," said the coach. The decision to play him as a striker against Watford surprised some, but Barry-Murphy was pleased with the decision, especially when he saw Moylan remain calm as he ran towards goal, a sign of composure that allowed the team to score a great goal.
Upcoming challenges for Cardiff include a clash with Middlesbrough, who sit second in the table, scheduled for Saturday, October 17. Barry-Murphy revealed he has not yet decided whether Moylan will retain his role as a striker, as he has also been a significant threat in midfield. His international team-mate Callum Robinson also stood out, scoring his second goal in two games after coming on as a substitute against Watford. Moylan, who has also found his way into the net in the EFL Cup this season, is seen as an exciting player with great potential to continue improving.
With the possibility of having scored his first career hat-trick in the victory over Watford, Moylan came close to scoring again when Chris Willock was brought down in the box. However, Willock's penalty shot was saved, something that left Barry-Murphy reflecting on the choice of taker, given that Salech is the team's usual taker. "I didn't plan much about the penalties," admitted Barry-Murphy, highlighting the importance of the team's performance and the need to support all players, especially Willock, who played an important role in the victory.
What happens next
With Cardiff City closely monitoring Moylan's performance, it is likely that he will continue to be a central part of the team's strategy in the upcoming matches. Manager Brian Barry-Murphy has already indicated that there is more to come from the player, which suggests he could be used in a number of attacking roles. As the season progresses, his development will be crucial for Cardiff, especially in their quest for a place in the Premier League.
