José Mourinho shared his emotions regarding his return to Rome, where he will face Real Madrid next Wednesday, in a Champions League group stage game. In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the Portuguese coach began by stating that he does not expect any kind of special welcome from the fans. "I don't expect myself to be strict. I don't expect anything, really. Just respect," he said.
Mourinho admitted that he has not yet started preparing for the match, both from a tactical and emotional point of view. "I need to defend myself from emotions and prepare myself to do my job well. I need to concentrate on that, trying to forget where I am and who I'm playing against. It never happened to me with Roma, but I've experienced it with Inter and several times with Chelsea. However, Rome is Rome", he highlighted.
The coach highlighted the special bond he has with Roma fans, which began from the moment he arrived in the city. "The feeling with the Roman fans was born from the beginning: they are special to me. The day I got off the plane, there were a thousand people waiting for me. I thought I hadn't done anything yet, I hadn't played a game or won a point. I didn't deserve that reception. But Rome is like that, I realized that later. The Roman fans realized that for me there was only one thing: Roma. I fought and gave everything I had. It's true that we won a competition that, for a club that has won many times, It may seem minor, but for those who are not used to winning it has enormous meaning. A friend of mine, a solicitor, was in Trigoria and took a photo of the entrance.
Regarding his relationship with the club's management, Mourinho said: "I paid for the relationship with the ownership, which had a different profile to mine, a different approach. But I never publicly commented on the situation. If I see the Friedkins in the hallway after the game, I greet them without any problems. I'm not capable of holding a grudge; I remember what was good about the experience and ignore the negative aspects, I'm not someone who beats themselves up about it."
What happens next
With the game approaching, Mourinho will have to find a balance between his emotional connection with the Roma fans and the need to prepare the team tactically to face Real Madrid. The expectation is that he will use his vast experience in competitions such as the Champions League to guide Roma to a solid performance.
