CD Eldense confirmed this Thursday that Lionel Messi is the new owner of the Spanish club that plays in the II League (LaLiga Hypermotion). In the announcement, Elda's team highlighted the beginning of “a new and exciting phase”, an expression that puts the historic Valencian emblem in the international spotlight thanks to its connection to the captain of the Argentine national team.
Without going into additional details in the communication made public, Eldense's message focused on the essential point: Messi will now direct the direction of the club's sporting project. The association of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner with an emblem of the Spanish Second Division has the potential to open new doors, both in terms of media and in the development of internal structures, reinforcing competitive ambition in an increasingly demanding and professionalized league such as LaLiga Hypermotion.
Founded in Elda, in the province of Alicante, CD Eldense competes in the second category of Spanish football, a stage where historic and emerging projects coexist that fight, season after season, for promotion to the top flight. In the context of the Second Division, the entry of a global figure like Messi could impact areas such as talent acquisition, commercial partnerships, internationalization of the brand and attractiveness among fans and sponsors.
For Messi, current Inter Miami player and world champion with Argentina in 2022, this step represents an expansion of his involvement outside the pitch, at a time when his influence transcends the pitch and is increasingly projected into management and the football ecosystem. At a sporting level, the Argentine's presence in Eldense's management structure does not interfere with his career in the United States, but adds a new dimension to his legacy, now also linked to club football in Spain, albeit on a different level to what fans have become accustomed to over almost two decades in the European elite.
It now remains to understand the strategic priorities outlined for the short and medium term at Eldense under the aegis of Messi, from the consolidation of the LaLiga Hypermotion project to the design of a competitive identity capable of bringing the club closer to the top places. What is certain is that this Thursday's announcement puts Eldense on the global map and opens a chapter that the club itself described as a “new and exciting phase” — a clear sign of ambition for the coming times in Spanish football.
What happens next
With Messi now in charge of CD Eldense, the club is expected to begin a restructuring that could include improvements to infrastructure and talent acquisition. Messi's influence can facilitate commercial partnerships and increase the club's attractiveness to fans and sponsors. Eldense's future in LaLiga Hypermotion could be shaped by this new leadership, with the expectation of a positive impact on their sporting aspirations.
