Manchester United are very close to reaching a full agreement with Brighton for the signing of Carlos Baleba. According to what was possible, the clubs agreed on the main terms and the Cameroonian international midfielder already has a five-year contract ready to sign as soon as the understanding is formalized. The fee and deal structure remain to be finalized, but the transaction is expected to exceed £60 million.
The 22-year-old player is preparing to travel to Manchester, where medical examinations will be scheduled as soon as the agreement is concluded between the parties. United's interest in Baleba goes back a long way, having been signaled since last autumn and with a first survey registered in the January transfer window. The midfielder has always remained among the club's priorities in this summer market and, if the transfer is completed, he should become the third addition to the club, after Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
Baleba arrived at Brighton in 2023, from Lille, and since then has played 112 games for the Seagulls. Last season, he played 35 games, despite being away for a period to represent Cameroon in the African Cup of Nations. He is a midfielder with range of action, physical capacity and intensity in the duel, characteristics that made him an attractive target for a United team in the midst of renewing the midfield sector.
This summer, Baleba is recovering from an ankle ligament injury suffered in pre-season. The problem, however, is not expected to keep him away for long, so it is not expected to affect the transfer or the schedule of the usual medical examinations.
Baleba's possible arrival is part of Manchester United's strategy to reinforce the midfield with freshness and energy, balancing the squad for a long and demanding season in the Premier League and domestic competitions. For Brighton, the sale will represent another chapter in the sporting policy of valuing assets and making significant sales, after having developed the midfielder since his arrival from French football.
The next steps include finalizing the financial structure of the agreement — with confirmation of the global budget —, the player's trip to Manchester and medical examinations. Once these stages have been overcome, Baleba will be in a position to sign a five-year contract and officially become a Manchester United player.
What happens next
After the deal is finalized, Baleba is expected to travel to Manchester for a medical, a crucial step before signing a five-year contract. If the transfer is completed, he will join Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as new additions to United's midfield, which could impact the team's formation and strategy next season. The club hopes that Baleba, at 22, will continue his evolution and development as a player in the Premier League.
