France national team defender Jules Koundé spoke about his vision of Didier Deschamps, who is about to step down as coach of the national team. Deschamps' departure comes after the last game of his career as coach, where France played in the game for third place in the 2026 World Cup against England, ending with a 6-4 defeat. Koundé emphasized that Deschamps' legacy goes beyond his image and is more related to the path he took throughout his management.
"A single moment? It's difficult to say, as there have been so many over the years. What really matters is the path he took: we all remember the situation the French national team found itself in when he took charge. We went through difficult times, both in terms of results and in the way we were perceived by the public, with the fans distancing themselves from the team. Over the years, Deschamps managed to change that situation for the better, thanks to the hard work of his coaching team and all the players who came through him. We should be grateful for that and for what we achieved in 2018, when we won the World Cup.
The future of the French national team also looks promising, with a squad full of young talent. Deschamps' last game was very emotional, where he expressed his gratitude for the team, thanking us for the years of working together, for the tournament and for all our efforts, even when things didn't go perfectly. In terms of team spirit, everything was wonderful, and we managed to provide moments of joy for the French fans, which is very important," said Koundé.
The 2026 World Cup, which takes place between June 11 and July 11 on Mexican, Canadian and North American soil, marks a new chapter in the history of football. The tournament will culminate with the final between the Spanish and Argentine teams, scheduled for July 19th. Deschamps' legacy will be remembered by many, not just for the titles he won, but also for the way he revitalized the French national team, making them a force to be reckoned with in world football.
What happens next
With Deschamps' departure, the French national team faces a new chapter, where the integration of young talents will be vital for the team's future.
