Josef Blatter criticizes FIFA after controversial annulment of suspension

Josef Blatter, the former president of FIFA, publicly criticized the organization amid a scandal involving the annulment of the suspension of the United States national team forward, Folarin Balogun, in the context of the 2026 World Cup. Balogun, who had received a one-game suspension, saw this decision revoked, which raised questions about the influence of external factors on football.

"Red letters should not be canceled after calls from politicians. They can only be revised based on rules, evidence and decisions by independent bodies," Blatter said via his social media account. He questioned the legitimacy of FIFA's decisions when there is political intervention, stressing that, if the president of the United States becomes involved in the situation and the player ends up being allowed to participate in a World Cup elimination game, the question that arises is: where is FIFA going?

Blatter, who led FIFA from June 1998 to October 2015, has faced his own share of controversies. In December 2015, he was suspended for eight years due to corruption scandals. This suspension was later reduced to six years, but in March 2021, FIFA announced a new sanction against Blatter, which bars him from participating in football-related activities for a period of six years and eight months due to several breaches of the code of ethics.

Political intervention in sport has been a recurring theme, and Blatter did not hesitate to highlight that football should never be a battleground for political power. This episode involving Balogun and FIFA raises serious concerns about the integrity of competitions and the influence of external figures on sporting decisions.

As we approach the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, FIFA faces the challenge of maintaining credibility and impartiality, especially at a time when political pressure appears to be increasing. Blatter's criticism not only reinforces the need for more ethical football, but also serves as a warning to FIFA about the risks of allowing politics to interfere in sport.
