Russian commentator Konstantin Génich spoke about Cristiano Ronaldo, striker of the Portugal national team, right after the round of 16 game of the 2026 World Cup, where the Portuguese team was eliminated by Spain. The match took place at AT&T Stadium, in Arlington, Texas, and ended with a 1-0 victory for Spain.Génich highlighted Ronaldo's great career, stating: "Ronaldo is a great player. There is no doubt about that. But this is how it should all end. We thank Cristiano for his contribution to the national team. I believe he will still participate in the next World Cup, under the guidance of the new coach of the Portugal national team. You will see", declared the commentator on his Telegram channel.
This analysis by Génich comes at a time when Ronaldo, at 38 years old, continues to be a central figure in world football, despite the criticism he has faced throughout his career, especially in international competitions. The Portugal team, which had high expectations for this tournament, was forced to leave the competition earlier than expected, generating discussions about the future of its captain.
The 2026 World Cup, which is taking place in the United States, Mexico and Canada, has been the scene of exciting games and surprises, and Portugal's early elimination was one of the big news of the tournament. Spain, current champion of the Nations League, managed to advance to the next phase, while Cristiano Ronaldo's team will have to rethink its strategy and future squads.
The current world champion, Argentina, was also present at the tournament, having won the title in 2022, beating France in a thrilling final that ended in a 3-3 draw and was decided on penalties. The next cycle of international competitions promises to be intense, and figures like Ronaldo continue to be the object of attention, not only for their ability on the field, but also for their legacy and impact on football.
With Ronaldo's departure from the national team being a debated possibility, the choice of the team's future coach could influence not only the player's continuity, but also the direction of the Portuguese team in the next international competitions. Ronaldo's future in the national team is still an open question, and fans eagerly await the decisions that may be made in the coming months.
