Folarin Balogun will serve an automatic one-match suspension due to the red card he received in the round of 32 match of the 2026 World Cup against Bosnia and Herzegovina, held last Wednesday. However, Balogun could face a longer suspension if FIFA's disciplinary panel decides that his misconduct warrants a punishment beyond the automatic one-match ban that is standard for red cards at the World Cup.
The U.S. does not have the ability to appeal Balogun's standard one-game suspension, as confirmed by FOX Sports rules analyst Mark Clattenburg. If FIFA decides to increase the suspension to more than one game, and that decision is imposed, the US will be able to appeal that decision.
Balogun was competing for the ball with central defender Tarik Muharemovic, and ended up stepping on the Bosnian defender's ankle as he fell to the ground. Brazilian referee Raphael Claus was called to the pitchside monitor following a VAR review and ruled that Balogun's action merited a red card.
Balogun is the first player to score a goal and receive a red card in a World Cup knockout game since Zinedine Zidane, who did the same in the final against Italy in 2006.
