Former Barcelona defender reveals he rejected Real Madrid despite
Former Barcelona defender Gianluca Zambrotta has revealed that he had the opportunity to join Real Madrid in 2006, but ultimately decided to move to Camp Nou, despite strong interest from Fabio Capello. The Italian's statements shed new light on one of the most intriguing transfer stories of that season, with Zambrotta's move to Barcelona coming to fruition just as Capello and Real Madrid were hoping to bring the experienced full-back to the Santiago Bernabéu.At the time, Zambrotta was part of a dominant Juventus team, before the club was relegated due to the infamous Calciopoli scandal, which forced several players to reconsider their future. Capello wanted Zambrotta at Real Madrid. The former Italy international has now confirmed that a move to Madrid was a real possibility. In an interview with newspaper AS, Zambrotta admitted that Fabio Capello wanted to have him in Madrid, along with other Juventus players who ended up moving to Spain.
"Yes. Fabio Capello – like Cannavaro and Emerson – wanted me to join him in Madrid. I chose Barça," said Zambrotta. The defender also explained why he chose Barcelona over Real Madrid, revealing that the sporting opportunities available at Camp Nou were decisive. "The reason? Besides being a top international club that had just won the Champions League... I don't know, it gave me the opportunity to play in competitions that I had never played in before, like the European Super Cup or the Club World Cup. I was 29 years old. Those were my last great moments", he declared.
