Chelsea announce signing of Geovany Quenda for £40M
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of young winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting in a deal worth £40 million. The 19-year-old player signed an eight-year contract, becoming the second reinforcement announced under the leadership of new coach Xabi Alonso, following the arrival of defender Marco Palestra, acquired from Atalanta for £42 million.Geovany Quenda, under-21 international for Portugal, had already agreed to transfer to Chelsea in March 2025, during the period in which Enzo Maresca was the team's coach. The young player is known for his versatility, being able to play in several positions, including as a winger, attacking midfielder and full-back. Although Chelsea's first team will only return to work on Thursday for their first session with Alonso, Quenda has already joined the team in Cobham to train during the week.

The club has shown confidence in players like me and I'm proud to be here, to be part of this club. I'm looking forward to working with my colleagues and the manager, Xabi Alonso. With this transfer, Quenda leaves Portugal, where he made 86 appearances for Sporting, including 16 in the Champions League, after having joined the first team under the command of former Manchester United coach, Rúben Amorim.
In addition to signing Quenda, Chelsea are also in talks to strengthen their defense, with talks ongoing to acquire full-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano and unsuccessful attempts to bring in defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. The club also failed to secure midfielder Granit Xhaka, who transferred from Sunderland.
On the exit side, Chelsea has already seen several players leave the club, including Marc Cucurella, who joined Real Madrid, and Tyrique George, who transferred to Everton. Andrey Santos is also set to sign for Manchester United, in a £50m deal agreed on Wednesday. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Jesse Derry has renewed his contract for a further six years and is set to join Sporting on loan.
