In the section VI Tempo Máquina, we regularly bring new stories from the past and, every weekend, we republish articles from our rich archive. This time, we travel to June 2011, when we had the opportunity to talk to Arnold Bruggink about his career. The then 33-year-old had just said goodbye to professional football after a final season at FC Twente.
Bruggink, who began his career in the 90s at the same club, also had spells at teams such as PSV, Real Mallorca and SC Heerenveen, before returning to Enschede in 2010. "In my own way, I managed to have a magnificent career," said Bruggink during his farewell interview. "Basically, the initial phase was the most fun of my career. As a youngster, I played without worries. I was a dribbler on the left and thought: 'What do I care? I'm going to make my moves'. At the beginning, I was also surprised. Jan van Halst could shout at me or give me a brutal foul in training. Nico-Jan Hoogma was also like that. I was considered the great talent, I was tested and, in the end, what matters is showing what you can do. Regardless of how or where you enter, if you know how to play, you will be quickly accepted."
Bruggink remembers his first game fondly. "Rob Baan let me debut for Het Diekman against Go Ahead Eagles. I remember Peter Rufai, the Nigerian prince, was in goal. The day before, Baan came to me. 'Prince Polley and Michael Mols are injured, you play up front tomorrow,' he said. At the time, I was very nervous. During the match, I missed two good opportunities. Evert ten Napel's comment on television that night stuck with me: 'Bruggink, great talent, he still lacks a little strength."
In its last season, FC Twente finished the championship in third place. "We had a good team with players like John Bosman, Michel Boerebach, Sander Boschker, Juul Ellerman, Paul Bosvelt, Berthil ter Avest and Theo ten Caat. At one point in the spring, we were even in second place. However, in the match against RKC, everything fell apart. If they won, we could be leaders. With the pressure, we couldn't cope. After half an hour, we were already 3-0 down."
"That year, I realized that I wanted to evolve and go to PSV. Coach Hans Meyer didn't agree, he thought I should stay another year at FC Twente. I played every game that season, but precisely in the last home game against NAC, Meyer decided that I would go to the bench. He supposedly wanted to experiment for the next season, but I thought that was quite immature. Months later, Meyer also left. That's football."
What happens next
After his departure, Bruggink will be able to continue to influence football, possibly through coaching or administrative roles at clubs.
