Marc Bernal, a young Barcelona midfielder, is seen as a promise in Spanish League football. His style of play, characterized by an elegant left foot and defensive skills, caught the attention of Liverpool's recruitment managers, who are looking for reinforcement for a midfield that has lost important players.
Why this matters
Liverpool's signing of Marc Bernal could be a significant step towards strengthening the team's midfield, especially after a difficult summer in the transfer market. Liverpool faced a difficult summer in the transfer market, failing to reinforce their midfield, even with the departure of Curtis Jones to Inter Milan for £30 million. With the departure of players like Stefan Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott, new coach Andoni Iraola was left with a very limited squad of midfielders. Despite some extra playing time for players like Trey Nyoni and James McConnell, the truth is that Iraola will have to work with the same experienced midfielders as last season.
In the search for reinforcements, Liverpool could move towards the January market, with the possibility of signing Marc Bernal, a 19-year-old from Barcelona. According to the Fichajes report, Liverpool's new sporting director, Julian Ward, could be considering this signing, as Bernal could be becoming a surplus player at the Spanish club. The midfielder, known for his elegant left foot, caught the attention of those responsible for the Reds' recruitment, and Iraola is one of his greatest admirers.
The publication reports that Liverpool's interest in Bernal is related to Iraola's preferences, who believes that the player has valuable characteristics for his midfield. Bernal's ability to act as a pivot, recover possession and orchestrate attacks from deeper positions fits into what the coach is looking for. The player is a defensive midfielder who stands out for his positional intelligence, calm possession and passes that break lines, controlling the construction of the game without depending on transporting the ball.
After recovering from a serious knee injury, Bernal contributed with five goals in the 2025/26 season, and this season has already added two assists in 311 minutes played. Although he has shown encouraging contributions, his participation is still limited, not establishing himself as an undisputed starter in the team. With a contract until June 2029 and a release clause reported at €500 million, the player is considered to have great promise. Reports in September indicated that a new contract was being discussed that could extend his contract until 2031, although this has not yet been confirmed.
Liverpool are being linked with a possible signing of Bernal in January, with speculation that Barcelona could be open to negotiations, but this remains uncertain. The recent report on the player's renewal suggests a desire to remain at the club, with regular playing minutes being crucial to his long-term future.
What happens next
Liverpool, under the guidance of Andoni Iraola, is expected to intensify its search in the January market to secure a new midfielder. The possibility of signing Bernal from Barcelona is a viable option, considering that the player may not have space in the Spanish team. The final decision will depend on evaluating the performance of the current midfielders and Bernal's ability to adapt to the Premier League style of play.
