Last Saturday, Ajax and NEC met in the Eredivisie, ending the match with a 1-1 draw. The game, held at the iconic Johan Cruijff Arena, was not marked by the best football from both teams, who missed an important opportunity to gain points in the fight for better positions in the table. With this result, both Ajax and NEC see themselves distancing themselves from their direct rivals in the standings.
Ajax coach Míchel had to make some changes to his formation due to several injuries. Players such as Anton Gaaei, Caio Henrique, Steven Berghuis and Kasper Dolberg were unable to participate, forcing Míchel to start Lucas Rosa, Owen Wijndal, Viktor Tsygankov and Tolu Arokodare. NEC, for its part, also presented some surprises in its lineup, highlighting the inclusion of Tobias Storm as a right-back, in an attempt to contain Ajax's dynamic attack.
One of the most exciting moments of the match occurred when Tolu Arokodare, who had already done an excellent job in the opponent's box, scored the first goal of the match by heading the ball into the back of the net, showing clear physical superiority over the opponent's defenders. However, Ajax's joy was short-lived, as shortly afterwards, Jorthy Mokio committed a foul inside the penalty area on Noé Lebreton, resulting in a penalty converted by Tjaronn Chery, which restored equality on the scoreboard.
Following NEC's goal, Ajax once again took control of the game, creating several scoring opportunities. Mokio, with a powerful shot, saw the ball hit the post, keeping the tie. The second half did not bring any major changes, with Míchel betting on youth by replacing Oscar Gloukh with Simon Adingra, who made his Ajax debut.
Despite attempts by both teams to secure victory, the game ended without any further goals. This draw left Ajax out of the fight for top spots, while NEC missed a good opportunity to get closer to the top of the table. Now, both clubs' attention turns to European competition, with Ajax preparing for a trip to Hajduk Split in the Conference League, while NEC prepares to face Levski Sofia in the Europa League.
What happens next
With the focus now turning to European competitions, Ajax and NEC will have to adjust their strategies and formations to face stronger opponents. The absence of key players due to injuries such as Dusan Tadic and others could force Ajax coach Míchel to explore new tactics and give more minutes to players like Tolu Arokodare.
