Persepolis, one of Iran's most iconic clubs, is reactivating its volleyball team, with the aim of remembering the golden times of the 1960s. This return is especially symbolic, as the Persepolis volleyball team was one of the most recognized in the history of Iranian sport, and its impact still resonates among fans. The first game of the team's new era is scheduled for next weekend, but fans' attention and enthusiasm are not yet fully focused on this new formation.
During the 1960s, the Persépolis volleyball team was led by charismatic figures such as Ali Moazzen, known for his short stature and curly hair, who stood out as captain and lifted many trophies. Alongside him, stars like Abdolali Nabi, a charismatic and fast athlete, won the hearts of fans. Nabi's popularity was comparable to that of other Iranian sports idols such as Farshad Pious, reflecting the strong connection between volleyball and football in the country.
Persépolis had already achieved glory before the Revolution, winning the Stars' Cup title in 1976. However, the euphoria generated by the volleyball team in the 1960s has never been forgotten, and the memories of that time continue to be celebrated by fans. The Persépolis volleyball team of the 1960s not only brought victories, but also built a loyal fan base, who followed the team's every move with enthusiasm.
Interestingly, one of the titles that resonates in fans' memories is the famous "Captain of the Independent at Persépolis". This title generated a huge uproar among fans of the two rival teams, arousing curiosity about the transfer of players between the clubs. In fact, the story referred to Asghar Naeini, captain of the Independente volleyball team, who was in the process of joining Persépolis — an event that was considered a notable achievement at the time.
Now, almost four decades after those glorious days, Persépolis returns to its volleyball team with the hope of reviving the passion and enthusiasm of its fans. Although Tehran's top-tier volleyball league may not seem that attractive at first glance, the Persepolis brand gives this competition a special shine. Those responsible for the club and the new technical team are confident that, over time, the fans' passion for football will also extend to volleyball, making the team rise again to the elite division of Iranian volleyball, even with a squad that, for now, may not have renowned stars.
What happens next
The first game of the new era of volleyball at Persépolis is scheduled for this weekend, and expectations are high among fans. The initial success could inspire a new generation of players and fans, solidifying Persépolis' presence in Iranian volleyball.
