PEC Zwolle welcomes Nick Viergever: 'With Nick, someone with experience arrives'

PEC Zwolle is very pleased with the arrival of Nick Viergever. The 36-year-old defender has signed a one-season contract and promises to bring much-needed experience to the Zwolle team. ‘The players also look to Nick because he has a wealth of experience,’ said Gerry Hamstra, the technical director, during the first training session of the new season. He highlighted that the team was looking for 'experienced Eredivisie players' to guide the group, a shortage that was felt last season.

A week and a half later, Hamstra fulfilled that need by introducing Nick Viergever as their newest signing. With more than four hundred games in the Eredivisie, Viergever arrives with considerable baggage. He is the oldest player on the team, followed by Younes Namli (32 years old) and Ryan Thomas (31 years old). Henry van der Vegt, the team's coach, expressed his satisfaction: 'We are very happy to have Nick with us. He brings enormous experience from the Eredivisie and has played at a very high level. We need this type of player to be able to beat stronger teams, something we still can't do often.'

Van der Vegt quickly noticed the difference in Viergever's first few days in Zwolle. ‘He only participated partially in the first training session, as he still needs to get back in shape, but I already noticed that he organizes everything. He gets the team moving and the players follow his directions. He is someone who commands respect, due to his vast experience. ’ Despite Viergever’s arrival, Van der Vegt is still looking for more experienced players for his team, given the youth of the squad. ‘Last season we often played the younger team. This was reflected in our game as at times we were completely lost. We need more experienced players who can organize the game and bring back the initiative. We are still looking for those Eredivisie players, who have personality. This could also include players aged 24 or 25.’
