Natnael Abraha, champion of Hoffenheim's U19 team, is about to be given the opportunity to join the Bundesliga's first team. According to information from the kicker, the young 18-year-old defender was initially planned for coach Christian Ilzer's team, which needs a larger squad due to qualifying for the Europa League and the resulting overload of games.
Abraha had a remarkable performance in the youth league and in the finals, where his team, coached by Paul Ehmann, won the title after a 2-0 victory against 1. FC Köln. Last season, the player already accumulated experience in Hoffenheim's U23, competing in the 3. League. As a right defender, Abraha will be the third option, behind Vladimir Coufal and Valentin Gendrey.
The Frenchman, who joined Hoffenheim from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, is now awaiting the recovery of Coufal, who suffered a serious ankle injury in July and is expected to return soon, although he still needs time to regain his fitness. Furthermore, Coufal will be absent, as he participates in the World Cup with the Czech national team, which increases Abraha's chances of playing minutes with the first team, having a contract until 2028.
On the other hand, Hoffenheim is also in advanced negotiations to extend the contract of Tristan Spranger, captain of the champion team. Talks to renew the defender's contract, which currently expires in 2027, are ongoing. The club's board, led by sporting director Andreas Schicker, decided that young talent should be assigned to a single team, thus avoiding the practice of training with the first team and playing on the sidelines, an approach that did not benefit some players last season. Therefore, Hoffenheim intends to implement a clearer strategy for integrating young talents into the team.
