Mike te Wierik will continue to represent Heracles Almelo despite their relegation. The 33-year-old defender extended his contract for another season, with an option for an additional year.
The central defender returned to Heracles last summer, after a period without a club. He started by training to maintain his physical shape and ended up gaining a new relationship. In the last Eredivisie season, he made 22 appearances, before an ankle injury sidelined him in the final stages of the championship.
“It ended up being an unpleasant year due to relegation,” Te Wierik admitted to the club’s channels. "That's not what I had in mind when I came back. But this is my club. I made my professional debut here, played more than 200 games and last year I was welcomed with open arms."
According to him, the decision was quick when the renewal proposal came up: “With everything in my power, I want to help the club return to the level where it belongs next season.”
For Ernest Faber, sporting director at Heracles, the continuity of the experienced defender is an important step: "Mike has a big heart for Heracles and an exceptional professional attitude. His experience, reliability and involvement make him very valuable, on and off the field."
