Chelsea defender Malo Gusto has been the subject of a consultation with Manchester City, according to L’Equipe. The French international has previously worked with City's new manager Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, which may have led the Italian coach to consider signing him at the Etihad Stadium. Gusto proved to be an excellent option for the right-back position, serving as a good alternative to Reece James. Although the 2025/26 season wasn't the best for him, Gusto still managed to add three goals and five assists in 49 games. Although he showed some vulnerability when covering the front post, the player is solid defensively, especially in one-on-one situations. Initially, he had difficulty changing his position, but Maresca helped him understand the demands of the role, and he performed excellently on the field. Manchester City has been looking for a right-back, as Rico Lewis has not shown his best form. Former coach Pep Guardiola adapted Matheus Nunes, a natural midfielder, to the right-back position. While it was useful, the team could benefit from a specialist in that position, especially one who knows the coach's strategy. City had already shown an interest in Newcastle United's Valentino Livramento, but as they don't appear to have moved in that direction, they turned to Chelsea's talent. However, Chelsea would be unwise to let Gusto leave, despite his failings. After a difficult season, he can recover under the guidance of Xabi Alonso. It's difficult to trust James to stay fit throughout the season, and Gusto has already shown in his first two campaigns at Stamford Bridge that he can be an excellent replacement for the Englishman. He has all the skills needed to become a complete winger. His energy on the right flank could be an asset to the Spanish coach's work. Chelsea already appear to be on the verge of losing a full-back (Marc Cucurella), and it would be unwise to let another one leave. The Blues should try to renew Gusto's contract.
