At 19 years old, Lewis Koumas has already achieved notable milestones in senior football: he helped Hull City secure promotion to the Premier League and has already won 11 caps for Wales. Even so, the Liverpool striker admits that he wants to show much more with the national team shirt. "Honestly, I don't think the fans have seen anything from me yet. I've had a few appearances on the pitch to prove myself, but I need to work harder to gain the coach's trust. I want to show what I can really do for the team," he told BBC Sport Wales ahead of the June games.
The response on the field was not long in coming. On Tuesday, in Cardiff, Koumas jumped off the bench to head in Neco Williams' cross and make it 1-1 against Ghana at the Cardiff City Stadium. It was his first goal for Wales, almost two years after his debut under Robert Page, against Gibraltar, in June 2024.
Son of former international midfielder Jason Koumas, the striker has been a regular presence in current coach Craig Bellamy's squads, with the stated aim of earning a place in the line-up. "He's very supportive, an excellent coach. I like to understand what I can take from his game and apply to mine, because he was a great player and scored goals — that's exactly what I want to do. He's a great role model and being with him on a daily basis, when I'm called upon, is a blessing," he underlined.
In 2025/26, Koumas split the season between two loans: in the first half, to Birmingham City (25 games, 1 goal, in all competitions); in the second, to Hull City, where he scored 3 goals in 19 matches and contributed to promotion via the Championship play-offs at Wembley. "It was one of the best days of my life, memories forever. I'm very satisfied with my progress. It's been two good years. I think I've played close to 110 games, I'm happy with the path and excited about what's to come", he highlighted.
Meanwhile, Liverpool, the club he belongs to, confirmed Arne Slot's dismissal on Saturday, May 30th. Still, the young striker doesn't believe that the coach's departure will change his immediate plan, which will likely involve a new loan: "I don't think the plan will change for me. It's about keeping my head on straight, working hard and, if I impress, I'll impress. Let's see what happens."
