It's official: Jonas Omlin is back at FC Basel. The Swiss goalkeeper returns to the Swiss Superliga and signed a three-season contract, valid until 2029, thus returning to the club where he stood out before six years abroad.
Omlin leaves Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he lost his starting spot to Moritz Nicolas after a period marred by injuries. In the last semester, he was on loan to Bayer Leverkusen, but did not play official minutes, serving as an alternative in goal.
In farewell, Rouven Schröder, sporting director of Borussia, highlighted the character of the Swiss: "Jonas' time at Borussia was unfortunately marked by many injuries. The fact that, even so, he was captain of the team at one point proves his good character and his dedication to our club. We hope, with all our hearts, that in Basel he can once again show everything he is capable of doing sportingly."
On the Basel side, the first team's sporting director, Valentin Stocker, celebrated the return: "We are very happy with the return of Jonas Omlin, with whom we have been in contact for some time. Jonas has proven, before and during his experience abroad, that he is much more than a safe goalkeeper: he brings leadership qualities on and off the field, always works in a highly professional manner and takes responsibility." Stocker also acknowledged the archer's injury history and expressed a desire to see him fulfill his potential without physical setbacks.
Omlin was also excited about the new stage: “It feels a bit like a homecoming and I’m incredibly looking forward to seeing the fantastic fans at ‘Joggeli.’ I have a lot of positive memories of FCB.” The goalkeeper added that he wants to fight for titles again with the Basel team.
