It ended with a protocol line. On the day they also said goodbye to Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, Manchester United thanked Jadon Sancho and wished them luck for the future. It remained to be said that, 12 months after Chelsea preferred to pay a fine of 5 million pounds rather than transform the loan into a purchase, the Red Devils have now chosen not to activate the option of another year on the Englishman's contract.
Sancho's time at Old Trafford will be marked by a head-on collision with Erik ten Hag and by an unlikely feat: playing in the finals of the three European club competitions in three consecutive seasons, always on loan and for three different teams — Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa. A discreet ending to an adventure that began as “a dream come true”, when it arrived for 73 million pounds in July 2021, and ended far from expected.
Sancho's last game at Old Trafford came on August 26, 2023, coming off the bench in a comeback triumph against Nottingham Forest. In total, he made 30 Premier League appearances for United, only 10 of which completed 90 minutes. Apart from a seven-minute appearance in the 2024 Community Shield, he has spent the last two-and-a-half years pretty much out of the club at all times.
In March 2025, minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe did not hide his surprise at the ongoing charges, stating that United continued to bear part of Sancho's salary during his time at Chelsea and that a payment of 17 million pounds was expected in the summer — a scenario that did not materialize after the Blues activated the penalty clause to return him to Manchester.
Four key moments help explain the result:
- The failed year: in 2020, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made Sancho a priority. Dortmund set August 10 as the deadline and United believed they would give in — they didn't. Sancho stayed and had one of his best seasons: 16 goals and 20 assists in 38 games, two goals and an assist for Erling Haaland in the 4-1 German Cup final against RB Leipzig. He was called up for England at the Euros, but missed a penalty in the final lost to Italy and, along with Saka and Rashford, suffered racist insults that even led to a court conviction.
- Difficult tactical fit: hired in 2021 to offer an imbalance on the right, with Rashford on the left, Sancho preferred to play on the left. An ear infection delayed integration, and when Rashford exploded the following season with 30 goals from the left flank, he pushed Sancho to the right... or to the bench.
- Personal problems: in autumn 2022, Sancho took a break of around three months. Ten Hag associated the shock with England's absence from the squad and the prospect of missing the World Cup in Qatar, highlighting the link between the physical and the mental. The technician sought to manage the case sensitively, including specific work in the Netherlands.
- Breakup with Ten Hag: in 2023, he was left out of the squad for the game against Arsenal and the coach pointed out insufficient training. Sancho reacted on social media, saying he had been turned into a “scapegoat”. Benni McCarthy, from the coaching staff, later revealed that she tried to convince him to apologize — without success.
The split lasted four months and Sancho continued on loan to Borussia Dortmund, helping the Germans reach the Champions League final. Without the ability to keep him, and despite Dan Ashworth having brokered a truce for the 2024 pre-season, Chelsea seemed to have resolved the dossier with a loan that included a mandatory purchase at the end — a commitment that the Blues circumvented by paying £5 million to return him. Already in Manchester, Sancho was placed in Rúben Amorim's outcast group, trained separately and only left on September 1st for Aston Villa.
Now, United have decided not to trigger the one-year extension. At 25, Sancho still has room to relaunch his career. At Birmingham he left some signs, although he was a substitute used with just nine minutes remaining in Villa's victory over Freiburg in the Europa League final on May 20. Michael Carrick, former assistant and interim coach at United, recently praised the winger's technical quality — driving, short connections, creativity — but left the implicit warning: at the top, talent is only one part of the equation; the rest is finding your way amidst constant competition and demands.
