Cesc Fàbregas revisited the most memorable stages of his adventure at Como, in a Sky Sport special dedicated to the Lombard club. Between images and memories, the Spanish coach detailed moments that, he says, shaped his team's season.
One of the images is the speech at the end of the game after qualifying for the Champions League. «It was the last circle of the season. A very personal moment. We had a historic season, in which these guys exceeded their limits. I was moved many times by their courage, mentality, desire and quality. I felt the need to open up to them and thank them», he shared.
Fàbregas also retreated on the first day in Como. «I didn't expect so many people, it was a nice surprise. I came here often on vacation, even for weddings, but I didn't really know the reality of Como. That day I realized the passion and heart that exists here. I immediately felt like I was in the right place, because I'm like them: passionate. There are fans who followed Como in Serie D and Serie C, very loyal people. Now, little by little, the family is growing and seeing this evolution is one of the most beautiful things.”
The coach identified a turning point in the first Serie A game, a 0-3 against Juventus. «At that moment we were still very much a Serie B team. But that game made us realize that, if we wanted to stay in Serie A, we had to raise the level. Suwarso realized this immediately and we added young and experienced players like Nico Paz, Perrone, Kempf and Fadera who gave us quality, speed and helped raise the bar. From January onwards we started loading more.”
It would then be 2-0 against Juventus, accompanied by a hug from Nico Paz. «It was a great victory. It's a beautiful image. Nico made us grow up faster, he moved me many times. It has evolved immensely in these years. We have an important relationship: he trusts me and I trust him. That hug was sincere, from the heart.”
Another striking photo: Baturina's goal against Bologna, in the 90th minute. «I was coming from a difficult period. Martin is strong; Maybe it was my fault that I hadn't had many opportunities. That goal changed something for him and also for us. I remember everyone taking the field to celebrate. It was a beautiful moment. There were many at this time. I also think about when my family came — for me it is fundamental. The coach is never actually home; Even when he is, he thinks about work. So whenever something good happens I feel the need to hug them.”
There was also space for a record outside the four lines: the meeting with the Pope. «A very happy moment for me and my family, one of the most beautiful days of my life. My wife and I tried many times to go to the Vatican and failed. When we went to Rome to play Lazio, we were told we could meet him. It was something very special, we are very believers.”
Regarding departure rumors, he was peremptory: «There was a lot of talk last year, but I never said anything — and I don't think others did either. It's not always necessary to talk. I'm happy at Como. In life you make the decisions you think are best, but here I am fine.”
Fàbregas also commented on the episodes with Allegri and the expulsion against Milan. «I was wrong and I said it right away. There's no need for someone to point it out to me. When you make a mistake, you accept it, you learn and you move on. I don’t like this culture of massacring people as soon as they fail.”
Finally, he explained why he was left alone while waiting for news from other camps: «These are difficult times to manage. I wanted to be calm, without shouting or tension. The coach experiences enormous loneliness at certain times — I'm getting used to it. He makes many decisions and is often alone with himself. Even so, it was one of the most beautiful moments of my football career.”
