AC Monza sporting director Nicolas Burdisso has said he wants to sign Claudio Echeverri, a player on loan from Manchester City, for the upcoming Serie A season, according to Italian reports. Echeverri arrived in England from River Plate in 2025 and faced one of the biggest challenges of his career as he joined a City team that struggled to perform consistently. The 20-year-old had a difficult task during his brief spell at the Etihad Stadium, where he featured in an FA Cup final, lost to Crystal Palace, before enjoying a much more positive FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the United States. The highlight of his participation was a magnificent free kick which he converted against Al Ain in a 6–0 victory, scoring his first and only goal for the club. Due to an influx of world-class talent, Manchester City decided to send Echeverri out on loan. Although the club's board wanted the young man to move to Girona, the midfielder's representatives opted for Bayer Leverkusen. In Germany, Echeverri played just 270 minutes in 11 games, finding himself on the bench more times than not. During the first half of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, he was an unused substitute in seven of the 13 games in which he was available. As a result, Bayer Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand worked with Manchester City and agreed to end the loan deal early, which led to Claudio Echeverri moving to Spain in January, re-entering the City Football Group (CFG) circle and gaining more playing minutes. Since then, Echeverri has made 17 La Liga appearances for Girona, scoring and assisting once, with both contributions coming in the same game against Athletic Club in March. Due to his increased minutes and confidence, Echeverri has started to attract interest from certain parts of Europe and according to Gianluca Di Marzio, AC Monza are keeping an eye on the talent. A new loan could be beneficial for Claudio Echeverri given his current performances and the subtle increase in his minutes, load and playing intensity in Europe. These factors make the situation complex when weighing up his future at Manchester City, but if he continues to accumulate elite-level experience he could certainly develop into the player many inside the Etihad Stadium thought they were signing in 2025.
