FC Liverpool have unveiled Andoni Iraola as their new manager, succeeding Arne Slot, who was dismissed after two seasons at Anfield Road. The club's decision comes a week after the last game of the season, a 1-1 draw against Brentford. Arne Slot, who had a contract until 2027, was unable to maintain the level of success of his first season, where he won his first title since 2020. Last season, the team finished the Premier League in fifth place, which led to a change in leadership.
Iraola, who has signed a contract until 2028, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role. "It doesn't take much to be attracted to Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool," said the coach on the club's website.
While Slot made a promising start following his arrival from Feyenoord in 2024, the team failed to repeat those performances last season, similarly missing out on progression in the Champions League, where they were eliminated by PSG on three consecutive occasions.
The new management under Iraola will face significant challenges, including the need to find replacements for key players such as Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson, as well as the departure of defender Ibrahima Konaté.
Before taking charge of Liverpool, Iraola had a remarkable spell at AFC Bournemouth, where he set a new points record and led the team to sixth place in the table last season, securing a place in the Europa League. Despite initially being in negotiations with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Iraola chose to remain in the Premier League, where the competitions are more intense.
With his arrival, Iraola is expected to bring a new approach and greater competitiveness to Liverpool, both in the domestic league and in European competitions.
