In recent years, Liverpool's first team has undergone a significant transformation. On paper, most of the signings made sense, with Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak standing out. However, due to injuries, lack of cohesion and questionable tactical choices from Slot, nothing worked. This has led some fans to call for the return of certain players, and Andoni Iraola has now made a decision about one of Liverpool's idols.
Liverpool will not attempt to re-sign Darwin Nunez. With Hugo Ekitike injured and Mohamed Salah out, Liverpool's attack is in a difficult situation. Of course, players like Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz could fill the gaps, but with seasons being long and grueling, Liverpool need multiple options. Therefore, with Darwin Nunez set to leave Al-Hilal for free, the Reds have been linked with a return for their former player. The Uruguayan was transferred last summer due to his erratic finishing and the arrival of Ekitike and Isak. And although his start to the Saudi Pro League was positive, with the signing of Karim Benzema, the striker was deregistered and told he was no longer needed, leading him to want to terminate his contract and leave free of charge.
This piqued the interest of Liverpool fans as, with Ekitike out of action, they would clearly need a new number nine, and with Nunez always giving his all on the pitch, it seemed like a perfect option. But now, a new report from Football Insider has put those rumors to rest. "Darwin Nunez is attracting interest from Premier League clubs including Newcastle United as he approaches his departure from Al-Hilal this summer," they wrote. "Liverpool are not planning to move forward for his services any time soon, but as I revealed in the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, a number of Premier League clubs remain interested in signing Nunez. He registered nine goals and five assists in 24 appearances across all competitions for Al-Hilal last season. While Liverpool have been heavily linked with him, the focus is on bolstering options on the flanks rather than adding depth at the striker position.
Andoni Iraola must have other plans for Liverpool. One of the most obvious transfers Liverpool could make this summer is Yan Diomande. The winger has long been linked with a move to Anfield, with his performances for RB Leipzig attracting interest from some of the world's biggest clubs. Paris Saint-Germain have also been heavily linked with a move for the striker, but as they already have an abundance of options, a deal with the Ligue 1 giants seems a little more unrealistic for Diomande. If he joined Liverpool, he would immediately fill the gap left by Salah and start almost every game, but with PSG he would have fewer minutes and be alternated with his teammates. Other players such as Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Bradley Barcola, Rayan and Eli Junior Kroupi have also been mentioned, so even if a deal for Nunez is off the table, Liverpool are certainly not without options.
