Stellar in training and chaotic in games. This would be the perfect summary of Mastantuono's season. The Argentine's two sides have been a real challenge. The high level demonstrated on a daily basis at Valdebebas, where he showed his enormous potential, contrasted with his disconcerting performances on the field. The pressure to prove his quality ended up penalizing him in his first season as a Madrid player. He started as a starter, but his star faded. Mastantuono could not contain his tears when he said goodbye to Carvajal. To resolve this situation, the Argentine found a great ally in Arbeloa. After a quick assessment of the team upon taking charge in January, the coach quickly identified the reason why Mastantuono was failing to show his full potential in games. Arbeloa dedicated himself to him with almost daily work at all levels: tactical, footballing and mental. It was a real 'battle' with Mastantuono for him to regain the balance he had lost in his football. Often during training, Arbeloa or some of his assistants could be seen having private conversations with the Argentine to perfect details. The main message referred to his 'anxiety' to succeed: "You have to have more patience and calmness." A situation very similar to what Fede Valverde experienced when he joined Real Madrid in the 2018-2019 season. The Uruguayan displayed a level in training that had nothing to do with what he showed in games. He felt trapped, unable to release his football. When he finally let go, the great Valverde emerged and became a star at Real Madrid. A 'Fede syndrome' that now affects Mastantuono. The Argentine has been stuck in the mistake of wanting to prove with each play how good he is. Therefore, he fell into precipitation, haste, lack of control and, even worse, constant failures due to taking risks always and in any circumstance. The path should have been to get a lot more right than he got wrong to gain confidence, but he was going in the opposite direction. He trained much better than he demonstrated on the field, which left him stagnant. Arbeloa's coaching staff was dedicated to helping, as it was a typical youth problem, something they were used to dealing with in training. Confidence in a player is not only demonstrated by the minutes played, but also by day-to-day activities. And it was in this aspect that Arbeloa invested all his efforts so that Mastantuono could bring to the games all the quality he showed in training. The good news is that no one at Real Madrid doubts the spectacular potential he possesses, as he has already demonstrated it in front of his colleagues. Now you just need to be able to transfer it to games. "Yes, he trains much better than he plays", they confirm in Valdebebas. Mastantuono's season has generated a lot of speculation about his future at Real Madrid, including the possibility of a loan move to get the minutes he didn't get at the club. Recently, the club and the player met to lay the foundations for a decision on his future for next season. Mastantuono ended his first season at Real Madrid with a bittersweet feeling. On the one hand, he had a much greater role than other newly arrived players his age, 18 years old. After a brilliant start, a pubalgia problem and an 'impasse' in his game led to him missing minutes. Even so, he participated in 35 of Real Madrid's 56 matches, playing 1,484 minutes and scoring three goals.
